Overview

The Beechcraft King Air 360 is the latest evolution of the most successful business turboprop family in aviation history. Powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-60A engines producing 850 shp each, the King Air 360 offers a pressurized cabin for up to eleven passengers, a maximum range of approximately 1,806 nautical miles, and a maximum cruise speed of 312 knots.

Since the original King Air 90 entered service in 1964, over 7,600 King Airs have been delivered, accumulating more than 60 million flight hours. The 360 variant, introduced in 2020, brings modern avionics, digital autothrottles, and a refreshed cabin to this iconic airframe while retaining the rugged dependability that has made the King Air the workhorse of business and utility aviation.

2

History & Context

The King Air story began in 1963 when Beechcraft flew the prototype Model 90 King Air, the first pressurized business turboprop. It entered service in 1964 and immediately established a new category in business aviation. The King Air 200 arrived in 1974 with a T-tail and larger cabin, followed by the King Air 300 and 350 series with further refinements.

Textron Aviation, which now owns the Beechcraft brand, introduced the King Air 360 in 2020 as a modernized version of the 350 platform. The upgrade focused on cockpit technology, autothrottle integration, and cabin improvements while preserving the proven airframe and powerplant combination that operators trust worldwide.

3

Development & Updates

The King Air 360 features the Collins Aerospace Pro Line Fusion avionics suite with three large touchscreen displays and Innovative Solutions & Support (IS&S) ThrustSense digital autothrottles. The autothrottle system automatically manages engine power during all phases of flight, including automatic protection against exceeding torque or temperature limits.

Cabin improvements include redesigned executive seating, LED lighting, power outlets at every seat, and a refreshed interior aesthetic. The aircraft retains the proven PT6A-60A engines, four-blade Hartzell propellers, and robust airframe that have defined the King Air 350 series for decades.

4

Flight Characteristics

The King Air 360 flies with the authority and confidence that comes from six decades of continuous refinement. The twin PT6A-60A engines provide strong, reliable power with the characteristic turboprop smoothness, and the four-blade propellers deliver efficient thrust with reduced cabin noise. The aircraft climbs willingly to its FL350 ceiling, where the 6.5 psi pressurization differential maintains a sea-level cabin up to approximately FL200.

In cruise, the King Air 360 is stable and comfortable, making it well-suited for both short hops and longer stage lengths. The digital autothrottle is a welcome addition, reducing pilot workload during all phases of flight. The aircraft handles well in challenging weather conditions, and its trailing-link landing gear provides smooth touchdowns.

5

Use Cases & Target Group

The Beechcraft King Air 360 serves a remarkably diverse range of operators:

  • Corporate flight departments needing reliable, multi-mission turboprop transport
  • Charter operators offering regional and medium-range business travel
  • Government agencies and military operators for training and utility missions
  • Air ambulance services requiring a spacious, pressurized cabin
  • Cargo and utility operators in remote regions with challenging airfields
6

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

  • Most proven business turboprop in history with over 60 million fleet flight hours
  • Digital autothrottles reduce pilot workload and enhance safety
  • Spacious pressurized cabin accommodating up to eleven passengers
  • Proven PT6A-60A engines with outstanding reliability and global support
  • Versatile platform serving executive, cargo, medical, and special mission roles

Weaknesses

  • Fuel consumption is higher than single-engine turboprops in the class
  • Acquisition cost has increased significantly with the 360 upgrade
  • Cruise speed of 312 knots is slower than light jets at similar price points
  • Airframe design, while proven, is decades old compared to newer competitors
7

Summary & Conclusion

The Beechcraft King Air 360 continues to earn its reputation as the most dependable and versatile business turboprop ever built. With modernized avionics, digital autothrottles, and a refreshed cabin layered onto a proven airframe, the 360 delivers a compelling combination of reliability, comfort, and capability that no competitor has been able to fully replicate.

For operators who value operational flexibility, rugged dependability, and the massive global support network that comes with the King Air name, the 360 remains the gold standard in twin turboprop aviation.
